Learning with Joy

Consultations, workshops, coaching, and more …

Joy facilitates interactive workshops that offer teachers hands-on, practical methods for adapting curriculum to meet the needs of the wide variety of students in today’s classrooms. They will leave workshops with many ideas that can be implemented immediately in the classroom. Her philosophy of facilitating workshops mirrors her philosophy in the classroom – high engagement, get the “learners” talking/collaboration, practicality, humor, and inspiration.

Workshop topics include:

  1. Differentiated Instruction – Introductory/Advanced

Beginning with the whys of DI, Joy moves teachers through a detailed plan for creating a differentiated classroom community. Based on three foundations, teachers will discover how to know their learners, clearly define learning targets that are rigorous and meaningful, and design lessons and activities that intentionally respond to learner differences. For those ready to grow their practice with differentiated instruction, Joy will work closely with administrators to design the workshop that is a perfect fit for your needs. She comes equipped with lesson examples and activities for K-12, all subjects.

  2. Co-teaching in the Inclusive Classroom

Whether your school or district is just starting co-teaching or if co-teaching partnerships have been in place for awhile, discover timesaving strategies and techniques for building a teaching partnership, planning lessons and working together effectively in the co-taught classroom.

  3. Tiering Instruction – Development, Management, and Implementation

You may not be new to differentiation but still find yourself wondering how to meet the needs of the various levels of learners in your classrooms. From the beginning, participants will be engaged with sample lessons, practical strategies, and management tips for planning, implementing and assessing different tiers of learners. Topics will include setting the tone and language for tiering, routines and procedures for group management, creating engagement and rigor for every tier, and assessing it all! This workshop is geared to those familiar with differentiating and ready to grow their practice.

  4. Differentiation in the Math and Science Classroom

Yes, differentiation LOOKS different in math and science classrooms. This workshop focuses on either or both core content areas, depending on the needs of your district. With many classroom tested lesson examples, Joy will walk participants through the development of those lessons, how that plays out in the course of a day or several day time period, and the intentionality that is necessary to make the best choices for each learner depending on classroom dynamic.

  5. Get Them Talking! Processing Learning Strategies for Meaningful Instruction

The one doing the most talking is doing the most learning. This workshop focuses on the shift from teacher-centered to student-centered processing. Joy will explicitly teach vital processing skills through modeling and scaffolding towards student independence. Don’t commit assumicide by ASSUMING all kids come to us knowing how to talk about their thinking.

In addition to workshops, Joy is also available for one-on-one teacher coaching, modeling lessons in the classroom, and on-going teacher training to build leadership capacity.
